Moody Living Room

We are in the process of remodeling our living room. We currently rent a small 2 bedroom space and wanted to update our home. When deciding on what to change, we decided to focus on tangible things that we can take with us whenever we move. We started with our new couch! This is the start of our moody living room refresh!

This transition started when we received a defective sideboard from a manufacturer at work. When we informed them, the manufacturer sent us a new piece and didn’t want the original back. The defect was so minor that I didn’t mind taking it home to my house. It was far from my style but it elevated my living room and helped me look at my home design from a different perspective.

Our Moody Living Room Refresh!

When I originally started our design boards, I wanted a California casual/boho desert style. I love the look of neutral tones and natural materials. However, when we got our new sideboard, everything about that design went out the door. This is how we begin the transition to a moody living room aesthetic.

Our new sideboard is black mango wood with a modern, geometric design. It has weight and size that gives it a strong presence in our living room. This caused me to look at my living room design from a new perspective! I thought about a more unique and modern look with an emphasis on bold colors. Hence, a moody living room design.

I decided to choose a bold, moody design. We have been in dire need of a new couch. We purchased our original couch when we got married and chose it for two reasons. First, we liked the look of it with the neutral, off white fabric with wood tones on the base. Second, it was very affordable. We still love the look of it, however, it didn’t hold up well. It looks like we’ve had it for almost a decade instead of four years!

Our main goal for this living room refresh was to elevate our living room. Even though we are living on a budget (in case you didn’t know, my husband is in law school!), we wanted to feel like we have an “adult” look and feel to our home. So, that is exactly what we are creating!

Our New Couch!

When choosing a new couch, we wanted to bring our living room together in a moody and bold way. I knew I wanted a rich color but didn’t know how I wanted to execute it. But then, I thought “what about velvet?”. This is what changed everything!

We originally started looking at a blue velvet sofa. We have the Chris Loves Julia “Jules” area rug in natural/ocean for a rug in our living room. It has a lot of blues and browns which is what led me to start with a deep blue color. However, the more we looked, the more we felt it didn’t look right.

That’s when we shifted to green. Green on velvet is always such a deep and rich color. We looked for a long time to find the perfect emerald hue. A lot of the affordable options on the standard furniture websites had too much yellow in the undertones. I began to look at our manufacturers from work and fell in love with the Dylan Sofa from Four Hands in sapphire olive.

The Moody Couch

Paul Michael and I didn’t necessarily agree on how we wanted the couch to look like. I wanted a sleek and modern style while my husband wanted a more traditional and elegant style. Since I was able to convince him to go with a bold color, I figured I could give him the style.

The Dylan Sofa is everything we wanted. It has a deep emerald color with little to no yellow undertones. It has a beautiful dark wood base with tapered feet. I love the clean-lined arms for more of a modern look. The dramatic blind tufting was really important to Paul Michael. To him, that is what made it more elegant and sophisticated in style. And last but not least, it didn’t have any removable cushions!

Purchasing from Four Hands is difficult. They only sell “to the trade” which means resale businesses or interior designers or architects. The only way to order from them directly from the public is to visit their showroom in Austin, Texas. However, I did find this exact sofa in the sapphire olive, surrey auburn, and sapphire navy colors on Wayfair!

I purchased the sofa when I went to the Las Vega Design market in January. We met with our rep and placed the order in their showroom! They only deliver to a warehouse location so we had it shipped to our warehouse at work. We were able to transport the sofa to the house and our living room truly transformed!

More To Come…

This was just the beginning of our moody living room refresh! I honestly wish that we could do more but for right now, I am just focusing on tangible items that we can take with us wherever we go. What comes next will truly tie everything together and elevate our living room! Stay tuned for what’s next!
